Footwear: Is it the missing link in injury prevention for runners?

September 16, 2022, 01:00 PM – 02:00 PM EDT(-04:00)
Michael Ryan, PhD

Scientists and clinicians have been wrestling with the problem of how to prevent running injuries over the past 30+ years. While there have been incremental gains in reducing injury rates throughout this timeframe it still seems like there’s a long way to go before running is less dangerous, injury performance perspective, competitive soccer or even downhill skiing.

Footwear manufacturers have been motivated to positively influence this injury rate through advances in material design and footwear composition with limited success. This injury problem is often considered from the perspective of can running shoes prevent injuries; however, there is value in broadening the conversation to consider simply is footwear relevant in the incidence of injury. Taken from this latter viewpoint, the following presentation discusses footwear’s role as both the cause and cure for running-related pain.

Influence of Longitudinal bending stiffness of Footwear on Athletic Injury and Performance

September 16, 2022, 02:00 PM – 03:00 PM EDT(-04:00)
Bill Wannop, PhD

Forefoot bending stiffness is a footwear property that has historically received limited attention compared to other properties such as outsole traction and midsole cushioning. However, recent data has indicated that longitudinal bending stiffness has the potential to influence both injury and performance. During this presentation, previous studies examining the influence that footwear bending stiffness may have on injury and athletic performance will be reviewed. The most important effects of longitudinal bending stiffness will be highlighted, with tips and recommendations for selecting the appropriate bending stiffness profile.

Lived Experience Data: from running-related injury research to personalization of treatment and products.

September 16, 2022, 03:00 PM – 04:00 PM EDT(-04:00)
Jeff Moreno, PT, DPT

Data is dripping off each one of us, capturing every detail of every second of every behavior and experience. So why not use the details of today’s Lived Experience (LX) to improve your tomorrow?

This presentation will explore:

  • What LX is, why it exist, and scaling the N of 1 philosophy
  • How we collect, capture and activate LX data
  • How it has supercharged my patient/athlete engagement, enhanced clinical decision making, and personalized treatment/coaching.
  • Case Study: from clinical hypotheses to practical application
  • Run Research in the real-world using smartwatch data: Exploring associations between running styles, workload, running-related injuries (a prospective study not yet published).

The Future is Now (current use cases):

  • Unifying platform bringing all running-related researchers together for a common purpose, your running health.
  • Personalization of products and services at scale based on LX
  • Personalized engagement and brand loyalty

Load resolution in runners: What really matters…

September 16, 2022, 04:00 PM – 05:00 PM EDT(-04:00)
Simon Bartold

In this presentation, we will take a look at some of the great paradigms that have underpinned the running shoe industry for more than 40 years. Do these paradigms stand up to scientific scrutiny, and if not, where else should we be looking? Vibration is considered one of the key input signals in running, and yet it is one of the least investigated in the scientific literature. This presentation examines the nature and effect of vibration on human systems during running and poses a possible alternative explanation for running-related injury and performance.
