A Segmental Approach to AFO Design Using Composite Materials
ABC approved 2.0 CEUsEvent Date:
Oct 17, 2020 • 11am – 1:30pm
In this two-hour event, we will be addressing the design choices that can be made to produce the optimal patient results using carbon fiber technology. We will be discussing the use of prefabricated vs. custom AFOs. The presentations will cover a unique and advanced usage of the posterior dynamic return strut. The goal being, how to take advantage of the resistance nature that pre-impregnated carbon fiber materials allow. Advances in composite materials have created the opportunity to design and build lower limb orthoses that are more mechanically efficient. The clinicians will discuss the change in approach that takes place once we separate the function of the individual components within a lower extremity composite orthosis. We will go over proper casting and scanning techniques and present different modifications a practitioner can use to make a carbon fiber AFO. There will also be a conversation about proper footwear and what is appropriate for AFO use. ABC approved 2.0 CEUs

A Segmental Approach
October 17, 2020, 11:00 AM – 11:30 AM EDT(-04:00)
Wade Bader, CPO
It is important to be able to break apart each segment in a carbon fiber AFO design; the footplate, the strut, and the cuff. By combining them appropriately, you can see the function of each piece and put them all together to create the optimal AFO.
Talk
The Posterior Dynamic Return Strut
Keith M. Smith CO, LO FAAOP
There is a common misconception that the only way to provide ground reaction force is to use an anterior AFO. This section delves into how to effectively take advantage of resistance in a posterior AFO design.

Everyone has seen the typical carbon composite AFO but how do you pick which one is right for your patient? This section will go over different AFO types and how to pick between a prefabricated or a custom device.

Not every AFO is a perfect fit right out of the box. This section will give insight on some tricks and techniques to have a successful fitting. It will also detail ways to be successful before the cast or scan even leaves your office
