Current Pharmaceutical Treatment of Gout

This session will describe the mechanism of action of current medications to treat the symptoms of gout as well as medications to control hyperuricemia. Will also discuss drug interactions as well as side effects. Patient selection for the medications available will be included as well. This will include an evaluation of treatment options in controlling acute symptoms vs controlling hyperuricemia.

The purpose of this session is to explore the impact and manifestations of gout on the patient population within orthopedic surgery. Common orthopedic procedures in gout patients will be explored in multiple sub-specialties such as adult reconstruction, foot and ankle, shoulder and elbow, and spine. Preoperatively and postoperative healthcare utilization, costs, complications, and patient-reported outcomes will be explored within this session. The session will include information on strategies to prevent gout flares in the postoperative state and ways to reduce the need for further orthopedic surgeries. Lastly, the gaps within the existing literature on gout and orthopedic surgery will be explained and areas for future research will be identified.
