Lifestyle medicine is a newly recognized specialty that assesses a patient’s lifestyle to manage the most common chronic conditions, such as diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular diseases. Mobility plays an important role in maintaining an active lifestyle, which is one of the basic pillars of lifestyle medicine. Conversely, many conditions affecting the lower extremities can best be managed with lifestyle medicine principles. Lifestyle medicine can help create the most comprehensive lower extremity care by addressing the root causes of the most common chronic conditions that lower extremity professionals routinely manage, such as diabetic foot ulcers and peripheral vascular disease. This comprehensive, whole-person approach will increase patient outcomes and provider satisfaction while being cost-effective. This event has been accredited by the Ohio Foot and Ankle Medical Association as an approved sponsor by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education for up to 5 CME Contact hours.

Lifestyle Medicine in Podiatry

February 24, 2023, 09:00 AM – 10:00 AM EST(-05:00)

Proper foot health is important for performing physical activities, which is one of the basic pillars of a healthy lifestyle. Chronic conditions, contrariwise, contribute to many common conditions in the lower extremities, such as heel pain and osteoarthritis. Diabetes particularly has a profound impact on the feet, resulting in neuropathy and ulcerations. Diabetic foot ulcers affect the quality of life and increase mortality. Preventing diabetic foot ulcers starts with preventing diabetes.

Learning objectives are to learn how foot health plays an important role in maintaining good overall health, to learn how common chronic conditions affect lower extremities, and to learn the lifestyle medicine approach in preventing diabetic foot ulcers.
